The Department of Homeland Security has released a policy file set to take effect in approximately two months that would make it harder for immigrants on welfare to obtain a green card. The policy rule changes DHS regulations and includes a rule in which aliens who seek residency in the United States must demonstrate that they have not received public benefits.
This comes after the President signed a memorandum in May, reenforcing a Clinton-era law which would require those that sponsor an immigrant to pay back tax dollars for the public assistance those immigrants have used.
The new DHS rule gives many exemptions, and will not apply to aliens using Medicaid under the age of 21 as well pregnant women. “DHS will not consider public benefits received on behalf of another.”
